Newspeak, a quartet of Yale University undergraduates, performs a set of original music directly inspired by the exhibition The Ceramic Presence in Modern Art: Selections from the Linda Leonard Schlenger Collection and the Yale University Art Gallery. Formed in 2012, Newspeak plays a style of jazz that avoids easy classification. The group’s influences range from canonical to contemporary, a result of its members’ varied musical backgrounds. Consisting of Alexander Dubovoy, CC ’16 (piano), Eli Brown, ES ’17 (trumpet), Hans Bilger, BR ’16 (bass), and Griffin Brown, TC ’18 (drums), the group approaches composition like the artists approach clay: it experiments with a medium that is at once firmly established and malleable.
Gallery+ is an ongoing series of collaborations that invites students to respond to the Gallery’s collection through special programs and performances.
